FAQs

Do I have to be in the US to receive a scholarship?

The BMEF is a proud supporter of Montessori in the global Black community and has provided scholarships in 9 countries outside of the US. The qualifications for the scholarships are the same across the board, and the disbursement happens much the same overseas as it does in the US.

When do applications open?

We have 3 application periods throughout the year, for Child Tuition, Teacher Training, and Educational Capital. Meanwhile, research scholarships are accepted on a rolling basis. For specific information on each scholarship time frame, please check the scholarship page on our website.

Can I change the use of my funding after I an selected as a winner?

Use of your funds can be changed as long as they fall within the same category for which you are awarded. For example, if you received a teacher training scholarship and want to use it for educational capital instead, you will need to reapply for the educational capital scholarship. However if you received the teacher training scholarship and have to change training centres, this is acceptable as long as you inform us before we disburse the funding.

So does this mean I can apply for more than one scholarship?

Yes

What is my commitment to the BMEF if I accept a scholarship?

As much as the BMEF is committed to Montessori and invests in our Black Montessorians, we are only as powerful as our community and our ability to work together to champion the cause. We expect that our recipients become active members in this work, carrying forward the torch and spreading it further into communities. This includes being enthusiastic proponents of the BMEF, being responsive to our communications, sharing your story, actively participating in our events and fundraising, and supporting each other through resources, mentorship, and community.

What does it mean to be part of the BMEF community?

Being part of the BMEF community means being a believer in the liberatory and transformative power of the Montessori approach on us as Black individuals and collectively. In this community, we work to pay it forward in any capacity that is available to us. With our strong belief in the Ujaama principle of cooperative economics and human-centered development, we are committed to the idea of sharing social wealth and the work necessary to achieve it. We ask for the same from our community members.

How will the funds be disbursed?

Please note that before any funds are disbursed, you need to accept the award. For Child Tuition and Teacher Training, the scholarship disbursement shall be made directly to the educational institution for the benefit of the scholarship recipient. For Educational Capital grants, the scholarship funds will be submitted directly to your school or organization.

Teacher Training

Can I use the scholarship for my teacher training expenses outside of tuition?

Yes. We are happy to provide this kind of flexibility for trainees as we understand that these other expenses of training can still be a hindrance to its feasibility.
